Overview: The cultural effects of the design concept known as 'kasane', or layering things, can be seen everywhere in Japan, visible in the sliding doors, windows and folding screens of traditional houses, and in everyday items such as nesting sets of dishes. Our studio guest, architect and designer Emmanuelle Moureaux, helps us explore the special beauty produced using kasane and the aesthetic philosophy behind this focus on layered design.
